you can use "various" when you sell shares with different purchase dates all at once.

the cost reported is the total cost of all those shares.

or the average cost if you are tracking shares with average cost method.

so your interpretation is correct.

I'm surprised a 1099-B from broker or other financial institution would report that way.

 

Evidently TurboTax is also since it is making you review it.
