Since you understand the situation, document what has been done, document what is correct, document the steps you are taking to correct. Then any method you choose is fine. I take the path of least resistance and would simply correct what is being filed this year to make all the adjustments. Adjusting the basis is fine if it corrects the situation. If any agency asks, you have all the information and can show you took the steps to correct the situation.
