Investors & landlords
"Various" is an acceptable entry for the IRS. It means that there were multiple transactions on the same position (stock) that were all in the same Short or Long term category as reported on Form 1099-B.
There is a procedure for entering this type of investment transaction.
- Open (continue) your TurboTax Online return if it isn't already open.
- Choose Wages & Income from the left column.
- Scroll to Investments and Savings and click Add/Edit.
- Answer Yes to Did you sell stocks, mutual funds, bonds, or other investments in 20XX?
- If you see something else, select Add Investments.
- Answer Yes to Did you get a 1099-B or brokerage statement for these sales?
- At Let's get your tax info, choose how you want to enter your 1099-B (type it in yourself).
- Follow the interview until you see "Now, choose how to enter your sales."
- Choose "Sales section totals."
- Continue to enter the sales information for each category (short-term, long-term, etc.) based on the divisions on Form 1099-B.
- Use "Add another sales total" to enter a new category.
- TurboTax assumes "various" dates when you use this method.
