Who deducts student loan interest when both borrower (not a dependent of consigner) and consigner make payments on loan in same year.
I am the borrower. I am married filling jointly. I paid regular monthly payments, including interest, from Jan-Aug. My mother is a consigner. She paid the loan in full, including remaining interest, in September. Which one (or both of us) takes the deduction? If we are both eligible, do we have to figure who paid what portion of interest?
