Education

The 1099Q has NEVER went on my dependent children's tax returns. They are my dependents claimed on our return (including their SSN). I have received an option when they had an excess distribution for them to file and pay the tax on their return. I have also received the option to pay the excess distribution tax on our return. Since I can claim all my college students as dependents, all their education expenses have been claimed on our return using 1098T (their SSNs). You don't separate the 1098T and 1099Q (distribution to pay education expenses). If you do, you don't get an accurate accounting of what the ESA paid for expenses on 1098T. Go look at Student Information Worksheet - this is where Turbo Tax usually accounts for all those inputs. The info is also on the person on return worksheet, and my son having a problem inputting all his additional expenses (Turbo Tax bypassed the screen for one child) doesn't even show the amount from the 1098T box 1 on that worksheet. The 1098T didn't populate all amounts. Turbo Tax needs to look at and update the Education Section of Turbo Tax or go back to last years version. Amounts are not populating correctly and the 1099Q needs to be added to see how much the amount of the distribution was applied to all education expenses from 1098T. If the child is eligible for an education credit, the expense amount applied reduces, and may prompt an excess distribution - no double dipping on expenses. When the education credit uses expenses used for the ESA, it creates an excess distribution which is taxable. All education forms stay together on 1 return. Someone please HELP!!
