Yes I know you have offered that as a solution, but no matter how I slice it I just don't see a good way to make it fit in that definition. Even when I find guidance using a stipend under that category it says if a W2 or 1099 was NOT received, which in this case it was.  While the return is for a full time student, it had nothing to do with paying for school. Believe me, I wish I could be comfortable doing it that way, but frankly this question was directed to the person who answered about the standard deduction.  Sorry if it didn't appear that way. 

(I have also considered your second solution, but what concerns me there is again is says NOT reported on a 1099.)
