Education
Q. Some other suggestions include not entering 1099-Q on the return. Is that correct?
A. Yes, when fully covered by adjusted qualified educational expense (QEE). Absolutely, when fully covered by room and board (R&B) expenses. R&B are ONLY qualified for the 1099-Q. So, there is no chance of double dipping on expenses.
Q. How do you enter the room and board amount ?
A. Enter the 1099-Q BEFORE you enter the 1098-T. To get the screen to enter Room & Board, answer yes when asked if you have book expenses, in the 1098-T section.
Q. How do you enter the room and board amount if it is off campus?
A. 529 money can be use for off campus living, but you are limited to the lesser of your actual costs or the school's "allowance for cost for attendance" (basically what on campus students pay for Room & Board).
The student must be half time or more.
