The difference has to do with the credits, for the American Opportunity Tax Credit, the books needn't be purchased through the school, for the Lifetime Learning Credit they do.
This would apply more to a trade school where books are "issued" (paid through the program/school) versus a University where the books are available online as well as the school's bookstore (not required to be purchased through the school).
