Thank you for your reply. I actually called in to Turbo Tax help and found out that there was a question buried deep in the software interface that asked how much of the education expenses were used for the parent’s education credit. When the tuition amount was put in there, it made the earnings from the 529 distribution as additional income that was taxable.
