A note to Turbo Tax developers- the solution above (not entering the 1099-Q at all) works , BUT that doesn’t seem like a good solution for the average person who gets one.
When I put it in to my tax prep, the software says specifically that my kid owes taxes on the distribution.
When I put the 1099-q in to my child’s taxes, it doesn’t allow me to put in the 1099-T information or educational expenses in general because they are a dependent. It doesn’t ask if the distribution was used for qualified expenses.
In other words, the software or interview should be fixed.
