Thanks. Sorry it's taken me so long to respond.
You were right, I found the “Amount Used to Calculate Education Deduction or Credit” and set it to 0. Then it properly offset the 529 distributions with the college expenses.
Follow-up question. One semester, we had the 529 distribution sent directly to the school, so the 1099-Q has my son's name on it. The next semester, the payment was late so we paid and then got the distribution sent to us, so the 1099-Q has my name on it. I tried to include both of the 1099-Q's on my son's 1040 form, but TurboTax will only include the 1099-Qs with my son's name.
What do I do with the 1099-Q that has my name on it? Do I include it on my tax form?
