Q. Where did you see in the first link that convinced you that my son could claim the recovery stimulus (Recovery Rebate Credit).
A. About 8-9 paragraphs down, under the heading "Can you be claimed as a dependent on another person's 2021 return?"
"The parent who claimed the dependent on a 2020 return might have received the third stimulus payment in advance of filing their 2021 return this year, he said, and does not have to pay that back even if the grown child who is no longer a dependent qualifies now [I assume qualifies for the recovery rebate credit] when filing a 2021 return."
It doesn't so much "convince" me, as much as it leaves the "door open". At first, I though you could not do it. Now, I'm leaning toward that you can. If it's wrong, you don't get "audited". You get a simple letter, telling you to pay it back. Based on the simple fact that TT only asks about getting the 6475 letter, I think your safe in claiming it.
Turbotax audit protection only protects you against interest and penalties. You still have to pay the $1400 back. I wouldn't buy it.
