You can find the actual computation method in the Adjusted Qualified Education Expenses Worksheet on page 8 of the 2021 Instructions for Form 8863.  

In TurboTax Online, you can review your 1040 and see what the computation looks like if you: 

1. Click Pick up where you left off if it’s on your screen.
2. Click on Tax Tools in the left pane.  
3. Click on Tools. 
4. Click on View Tax Summary. 
5. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen
6. Review your education calculations
