Education

The American Opportunity Credit can be claimed 4 years.

An eligible student is defined as a student who:

  • Is enrolled at least half-time in a program leading to a degree, certificate, or other recognized credential.
  • Had at least one academic period beginning during the year.
  • Didn't claim the American Opportunity Tax Credit for more than three previous years.
  • Didn't complete the first four years of post-secondary education before the beginning of the year.

Now if he has claimed that credit 4 years already he can claim the Lifetime Credit

Lifetime Learning Credit

Generally, if you paid for qualified education expenses for an academic period beginning in any tax year or in the first three months of the next year, then you're allowed to take the Lifetime Learning Credit

TurboTax will automatically allow the credit that he qualifies for if he answers the questions accurately.
