My case is the same, We are going to file a joint return but my wife is an international student she doesn't have SSN how can I file a tax return for her.Thank you
I may have to send you to an expert. There are reasons you might not want to file jointly, but I am not up on them. Basically, if you have a non-resident spouse, you have the option of treating them as a resident for tax purposes. But I don't think the principle is the same when your spouse is living in the US under a non-resident student visa. And if you did, that might change other important things.
Start here,
https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/foreign-students-and-scholars
and you may want to check the school's international students office to see if they have recommendations or a list of trusted tax preparers.
