I may have to send you to an expert.  There are reasons you might not want to file jointly, but I am not up on them.  Basically, if you have a non-resident spouse, you have the option of treating them as a resident for tax purposes.  But I don't think the principle is the same when your spouse is living in the US under a non-resident student visa.  And if you did, that might change other important things.
