The minimum income amount depends on your filing status and age. In 2019, for example, the minimum for single filing status if under age 65 is $12,200. So does this not apply in the situation of scholarship money being over tuition. You say they cant make over $6300. Where does that number come from? My daughter had earned income and scholarship overage more then $6200 but what I found online says it can be under $12,200 and not file a return
