Computer as an education expense for 529 plan--how to enter expense
I am trying to enter my son's college expenses to show that they offset our withdrawal from a 529 account. One of these expenses is a computer. The problem is that the TT screen notes for the screen "Did [Student] Pay for Books or Materials to Attend School?" say that a computer can be entered as an educational expense only if he was *required* to buy it. But this is a stricter test than is required for 529 accounts (per the IRS), which says that a computer is an eligible expense if "it's to be used primarily by the beneficiary during any of the years the beneficiary is enrolled". So if I follow the TT instructions, our spending comes up short with respect to the 529 withdrawal. Is there a different place where this expense should be entered?
I have a similar question about other fees and expenses that I believe would be eligible 529 expenses, such as a required enrollment deposit, even if they are not eligible for other purposes. It is not clear to me how or where these can be entered.
Thanks!
