When you enter 1 for the number of dependents attending college it will give you the exemption. The information that you entered about the dependent in the Personal Info section when you started your return affects whether or not the New Jersey interview offers you the additional exemption.
The additional exemption is only for your *dependents* attending college, not for yourself or your spouse.
