Can I use 529 money to reimburse myself for expenses from buying an airplane and fuel for my son who is a flight student?
My son is a flight student at a 529 qualified university. His flight fees are all paid through the university so they qualify as an approved expense. However, my son is not getting enough flight hours with his school. (The FAA requires him to have 1,000 hours to go to work for the regional air carriers, but by the time he graduates he will have only logged about 300 hours through his university.)
If we purchase a small plane to help him get his FAA required additional 750 flight hours, can we use our remaining $10,000 of 529 money and count part of the plane cost or the fuel or maintenance as qualified expenses?
