The maximum income limit for claiming an education credit in 2018 is different for each credit. Below is a list of income limits.


The income limit for the American Opportunity Credit:

$180,000 if married filing jointly;

$90,000 if single, head of household, or qualifying widow(er)


Income limit for the Lifetime Learning Credit:

$134,000 if married filing jointly;

$67,000 if single, head of household, or qualifying widow(er)


Income limit for the Tuition and Fees Deduction:

$160,000 if married filing a joint return;

$80,000 if single, head of household, or qualifying widow(er).


Income limit for the Student Loan Interest Deduction:

single, head of household, or qualifying widower---more than $65,000 but less than $80,000 the credit is reduced because of the phase-out.

$80,000 or more eliminated by the phase-out.

married filing joint return---more than $135,000 but less than $165,000 reduced because of the phaseout.

$165,000 or more eliminated by the phase-out.
