Qualify for AOTC, but cannot claim in Turbotax.

I have received the AOTC for the past two years (2016, 2017). Next year will be my last year as a college student. Turbo says I qualify, but am still unable to claim. I am concerned that I will not be able to claim the 2018 AOTC for reasons I am unaware of. Here is some more information:

  • I am single and claiming myself.
  • Full time student.
  • Have only claimed the AOTC twice.
  • Am not graduating this year.
  • Did not have enough income/wages for a refund (made less than $500).
  • My 'other education expenses' are less than $200.
  • I received about $4,500 in grants & scholarships.
  • My tuition & related expenses were around $14,000 for 2018.

From what I have read, these things should not affect my ability to claim the AOTC. Could any of this information prevent me from claiming? Are there other reasons why I cannot claim? Let me know if I am missing something.

How old are you?

If you are under age 24 and at least one of your parents are alive, you do not qualify for the Refundable portion of the AOTC.

Because you had an income of less than $500, you would not have any tax liability to qualify for the non-refundable portion.
