Education
To enter information reported to you on Form 1098-T please follow these steps:
- In your return, click on Federal Taxes > Deductions. [In TT Self-Employed: Personal > Deductions & Credits > I'll choose what I work on]
- In the Education section, click Start/Revisit next to Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T). [See Screenshot #1, below.]
If you haven't entered education expense information yet:
- You will see a screen Do you want to enter your higher education expenses? click the Yes box.
- If you are filing jointly with a spouse or have dependents, you will see the screen, Tell Us Which Person Was a Student in 2016, select the correct person from the list. [Screenshot #2]
- Continue through the screens, entering the requested information
- On the screen, Did [your name] get a 1098-T from [school name] for 2016?, mark the Yes circle and click Continue. [Screenshot #3]
- On the next screen type in the info from your 1098-T.
- Continue through the rest of the screens, entering the requested information. TurboTax will calculate whether a credit or deduction will give you the most benefit.
If you have already added some education information:
- You will see a screen Your Education Expenses Summary. [Screenshot #4]
- Click on Edit to review/revise the information you've entered.
- On the next screen, Here's Your
Education Summary, click on the Edit box next to the item you
wish to access.
