The IRS has partnered with certain payroll service providers (PSPs) to include a 16-character verification code on many Forms W-2 provided to employees.  This initiative is one in a series of steps implemented by the Security Summit to combat tax-related identity theft and refund fraud.

If the box is empty on your W-2, leave the box blank when you enter your W-2 info. Only some W-2s will have a verification code this year.

On the other hand, if you had a verification code on your W-2, but experienced an error after entering it, just delete the code. It won’t delay the processing of your tax return.
