To make sure that you qualify, use the filing status of single for your 2021 tax return and check the box that no one can claim you as a dependent. This will ensure that you will not have the status of a dependent and are entitled to the third stimulus payment through your 2021 tax return.
The IRS states that Individuals who were claimed or who could be claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return for 2019 or 2020 may now be eligible if they can't be claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return for 2021.
