It depends. If I understand this correctly, you want to claim the standard deduction for federal, and itemize for the state. What state is this in? Some states have a provision in the software where you are able to take the standard deduction for the federal, and itemize for the states. Other states will conform to federal standards, meaning that you will need to take the same deduction for both returns.
If this is the case, then you need to prepare two returns. If you are using Turbo Tax Online, you will need to set up a second account to do this. If using the software, then you will not need to do this.
- One that itemizes deductions for both federal and state
- One that takes the standard deduction for both federal and state.
- In the the second example, you will electronically file the federal return and indicate you will mail your state because this state return will not be sent to the state.
- In the first example, you will indicate that both returns must be mailed because you do not want to send in the federal by efile since this is not the return that will be submitted to the federal government. You will print and mail the state return in accordance with the filing and mailing instructions.
Confusing I know but most states because of the way their tax code is setup will not allow a different deduction standard. There are a few exceptions however.
Here are my instructions on how to clear itemized deductions to claim the standard deduction.
- If working in the online version go to federal>deductions and Credits>charitable donations
- Go to Donations to Charity in 2021 and remove all charitable donations from this section.
- Now Scroll to the very bottom
- Select Wrap up Tax Breaks (Online)
- Continue through the interview until you reach a message informing you that the Standard Deduction is Right for you.
- The very next screen will say "Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act"
- Enter your donation.
If you are working in Desktop first remove all charitable donations as described above. After this is done, perform the following steps while you are working in the deductions and credit section.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page
- Select Done with Deductions
- Let's check your Deductions .. Continue
- Here are your 2021 Deductions ... Continue
- The Standard deduction is right for you ... Continue
- GET A TAX BREAK FOR DONATING CASH TO CHARITY
- Enter your amount
