Somehow in all these years, having others do my taxes, I never realized that what I call a 1099 was actually a 1099-NEC. It's embarrassing to be clueless but better to own up, once a clue arrives...]
[EDIT 2 next day: I figured out a major source of confusion for me: TurboTax's varied use of Search and Find. The instructions different people copy-pasted said "search for Schedule C," so I clicked the Search magnifying glass at top (next to Help Center) got a search box that popped out to the right, where entering Schedule C just produced help pages. Eventually I figured out that I needed to click FORMS at the TOP LEFT, and THEN I could see the list of forms, and scroll to Schedule C. Note: there is nothing else I can see in menus called Search, so perhaps the copy-pasted text could be made more accurate?]
