OK. I figured out the workaround myself. You basically need to skip the QuickBooks import initially, manually add a dummy value into the "Salaries and Wages" box, and then import QuickBooks afterward. This will forever enable the editability of Line 8.

Here are the steps.

  1. Create a new return and follow prompts.
  2. When you get to the start of the "Federal Taxes - QuickBooks" subsection, select "No thanks. I'll enter my QuickBooks info manually." and click "Continue".
  3. Select View | Forms from menu.
  4. Navigate to Form 1120S p1-2 in form list.
  5. In the "Salaries and Wages (less employee credits) Smart Worksheet", click in the textbox for "A Salaries and wages" and click the + button that will appear to the left of the box. launch-dialog-zero-salary.png
  6. After the "Supporting Details" dialog pops up, enter "0" in the "Amount" column of the first row and close the dialog.dialog-supporting-details-zero-salary.png
  7. Select View | Step by Step from menu.
  8. Select "Federal Taxes - QuickBooks" subection.
  9. Select "Yes. Let's import from QuickBooks to save time." and click "Continue".
  10. Select the QuickBooks file to import from and click "Continue".
  11. From the "Replace Existing Information" dialog, click "Add".dialog-replace.png
  12. Select View | Forms menu.
  13. Navigate to Form 1120S p1-2 in form list.
  14. In the "Salaries and Wages (less employee credits) Smart Worksheet", click in the textbox for "A Salaries and wages" and click the + button that will appear to the left of the box.
  15. After the "Supporting Details" dialog pops up, blanking out the value imported from QuickBooks, and update the zero value in the first line with the correct value as needed.dialog-supporting-details-fixed-salary.png
