Using TurboTax for Desktop, you can trace the flow of any form calculations using Forms Mode. (This function is not available in the online version; you will need to switch your return to a desktop installation.)

  1. As mentioned above, go to Forms and open Schedule E Wks for the property in question.
  2. Scroll down the Carryovers Smart Worksheet.
  3. Right-click on the box for Regular Tax on Line B.
  4. Choose "About At Risk C/O..."

You will see this information for At Risk Carryovers:

"If you didn't use the transfer option, enter any Schedule E at risk loss carryovers including any at risk loss carryovers for dispositions related to this activity on lines B through F. Any amount on line B will flow to line 19, "Other Expenses", as a "SECTION 465(d) CARRYOVER". Any amounts on lines C through F will automatically flow to the appropriate line on Schedule D and/or Form 4797."

Also, as you right-click, notice that "Data Source" is grayed out. This means the number is a direct entry and not calculated. If you enter a number here and it stays blue, TurboTax has accepted your entry.

If you are working in Forms mode, you may find it useful to follow the flow of numbers on forms.

When you find a number you need to change that is in a black font, right-click the number and choose "Data Source." This will bring up a box with a hyperlink to the form where that number was sourced. If the number is still black on that form, repeat the Data Source + hyperlink to follow the number to the next form.

When you reach a number in blue, you can revise that number without creating a form error. Any form with a red exclamation point has an error. Click the Errors icon above the forms list to see an explanation of that error below the form when opened in the large window.

Any number in green was imported from last year and should not be changed.
