if you didn't use the vehicle at all during the year, enter zero for Total miles driven and zero for business miles from 1/1 thru 6/30

If you used the vehicle only between 7/1-12/31, enter actual total miles and business miles for 7/1-12/31 only. As long as the total miles are at least as much as the business miles, the entry should be accepted.

This year the mileage rate changed mid-year, which caused some confusion over how to report miles for a vehicle that was not used the entire year. A combination of zero or blank entries may need to be tested in order to resolve the issue on some returns. The only information of interest to the IRS is the number of business miles used to calculate the vehicle deduction.
