If this was for your 2017 property taxes, you'd just subtract it from your property taxes paid in 2017 to reduce your deduction.
But since this is a 2016 refund from your real estate taxes, it would be reported only if you itemized in 2016 and claimed real estate taxes as a deduction, and got a tax benefit from claiming the deduction.
If all of it is taxable, report it as Other Income on Line 21 of your 1040.
- First, go to Federal and select Wages and Income.
- Scroll down to Less Common Income
- Choose the last item, Miscellaneous Income
- On Let's Work on Any Miscellaneous Income choose the last selection, Other reportable income.
