Is my $1500.00 contribution to my health savings account in 2017 a loss nor can I claim the distributions either (lost high deductible insurance July 2016)?

I retired 7/29/16 and lost my health insurance. I just discovered that I should not be using my health savings account any longer.  Is it possible to claim the $1500. contribution I made to the health savings account in July 2017?
