Can I use my HSA to pay for stepdaughter's expenses? She is covered under her mom's insurance and her mom claims her as a dependent. Her dad & I have individual coverage.
I have an individual high deductible plan through work. My husband, her dad, has an HMO plan. Stepdaughter is covered by her mom's high deductible plan. Her mom also claims her as a dependent for tax purposes. Can I use my HSA account to pay for her medical expenses since she's not on my plan and not my dependent. I know if it was my husband's HSA, we could use it based on this "Each parent can include the medical expenses he or she pays for the child, even if the other parent claims the child's dependency exemption", but does it extend to stepparents? Thanks!
