Generally, the per diem rate can be taken only when the driver spends the night away from home. So if your spouse is away for two nights, you could claim two days per diem. A more conservative approach would be to take one and one-half days of the standard rate. The per diem rate for meals effective October 1, 2017 is $63 per day.
