Deductions & credits

You may be able to claim a credit for the charging station since you own it. You must be the original owner of the charging station and it must be installed at your main home if it isn't used for business or investment purposes. For more information, please see IRS Instructions for Form 8911 and What is Form 8911: Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit.

You can't claim a credit for the car because in the case of a leased vehicle the lessor, not the lessee, may claim the credit. See IRS Instructions for Form 8936 for more information.

To enter your qualifying charging station in TurboTax:

  • Continue working on your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in and click Take me to my return.)
  • Click Tax Tools (lower left side of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
  • In the search bar, type charging station.
  • In the I'm looking for: box, highlight charging station, then click GO.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions.

Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function and "Jump to" link (instead of "Tax Tools") to search for the topic.
