I'm a self-employed, expat working in Ecuador. Why do I still have to pay taxes if I qualify for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion?
Wouldn't the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion "exclude" my income from being taxed? I earned approximately $12,000 (I was paid with checks from my clients, my clients are not US companies but Ecuadorian companies) in 2006 and even after I filled the "Foreign Earned Income and Exclusion" section of Turbotax I still owe approximately $1,400 in taxes. Why is this? Wouldn't this be double taxation?
