Deductions & credits
Yes, you can report property tax (also called real estate tax) as an itemized deduction under Deductions & Credits. (Note: If the property tax is for rental or business real estate, you will enter the tax in the rental or business section of TurboTax, respectively.)
To enter your property tax in TurboTax:
- Open (continue) your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in and click Take me to my return.)
- Click My Account (top right of your screen).
- Select Tools.
- In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
- In the search bar, type property.
- In the results box, highlight property (real estate) tax, then click GO.
- You'll land on Did you pay property or real estate taxes in 2016? Click Yes.
- Next you may Enter the property taxes you paid. (Click the screenshot below to enlarge it for reference.)
Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function (instead of "My Account") to search for the topic.
