Deductions & credits
You may be able to claim a portion of the expenses. Per IRS Pub 526, Charitable Contributions, you may deduct up to $50 per month for each full calendar month the student lives with you as a charitable contribution if you itemize deductions (Schedule A). To qualify for a deduction, the student must:
- live in your home under a written agreement between you and a qualified organization,
- not be your relative or dependent, and
- be a full-time student in grade 12 or lower at a school in the United States.
Please see the FAQ below and Reporting expenses for a student living with you in IRS Pub 526 for more information.
