Deductions & credits

You can enter your property tax on the same screen that you report your mortgage interest.  Please follow these steps:

  1. Click on Federal Taxes > Deductions & Credits.
  2. In the Your Home section, click on the Start/Revisit box next to Mortgage Interest, Refinancing, and Insurance.
  3. If you haven't entered any mortgage information yet, just proceed through the screens, entering the requested information on your first mortgage.  If you have entered mortgage information, you will see the Home loan deduction summary.  Click Edit on the line for the lender.
  4. On the screen, Let's get the details from your [lender] 1098.  You can enter your property taxes in the box labeled Property (real estate taxes) paid.
  5. Click Continue when you're finished.

If you do not have mortgage interest to report, follow these steps to enter only your property taxes:

  1. Click on Federal Taxes > Deductions & Credits.
  2. In the Your Home section, click on the Start/Revisit box next to Property Taxes.
  3. On the next screen, enter the property taxes in the box labeled Additional property (real estate) taxes.

Even though you may using the standard deduction on your federal return, it's a good idea to enter any possible deductions--they may come in handy on your state return.
