Deductions & credits
You would enter the real estate taxes from your closing statement in the same section as real estate taxes received on Form 1098 Mortgage Statement. See the information below.
You do not need to send any documentation to the IRS.
- Type 1098 mortgage interest, personal in the search/find box and click search/find.
- Click on Jump to 1098 mortgage interest, personal.
- Continue with the onscreen questions until you get to the 'Tell Us More About Your Loan from xxxx' and put a check mark in front of 'I did not receive a 1098'. See the screenshot below.
- Continue with the onscreen questions.
Real estate tax is deductible in the year you paid it – not necessarily the year the payment is for. So if you pre-paid your 2016 real estate taxes in 2015, deduct them on your 2015 tax return.
