One of the most significant benefits of the HERO program is its ability
to convert home repairs into a tax deductible expense. In all cases, the
interest portion of the payments are tax deductible.
According to page
151 of IRS Publication No. 17,
the principal portion of the payment is deductible for repairs, but not
for improvements.
