Gifted a home in 2001. Cannot find paperwork for cost of home built in 1971. Will fair market value on real estate bill work?

Mother-in-law (deceased now) gifted to my wife. We never found any paperwork for the cost of the home which they had built new. Is there any thing we can do to add to the cost basis?
