Deductions & credits
The car registration fee and sales tax on the new car can be entered into TurboTax but it only makes a difference if you have expenses like mortgage interest, property taxes, medical expenses, charitable donations etc. You have to "itemize" your deductions for it to count. This means you don't take the Standard Deduction on Line 40 of your 1040. Instead you use Schedule A. You will need TurboTax Deluxe version to itemize your deductions.
If you choose to do it, here's how:
To enter your car registration fees in TurboTax Online or Desktop, please follow these steps:
- Once you are in your tax return, click on the “Federal Taxes” tab
- Next click on “Deductions & Credits”
- Next click on "jump to full list" or “I’ll choose what I work on”
- Scroll down the screen until to come to the section “Cars and other things I own”
- Choose "show more", then car registration fees and follow the onscreen instructions
