Deductions & credits
Yes, if you itemize deductions you may deduct property tax (real estate tax) for land you own, even if it is located in another state.
To enter your property tax (real estate tax):
- Open (continue) your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in and click Take me to my return.)
- Click My Account (top right of your screen).
- Select Tools.
- In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
- In the search bar, type real estate tax.
- In the results box, highlight real estate tax, then click GO.
- TurboTax prompts Did you pay property or real estate taxes in 2016? Click Yes. (Click the first screenshot below for reference.)
- Now you may Enter the property taxes you paid. (Click the second screenshot below.) Include the amount you paid for land tax in the Additional homes or land box, then click Continue.
Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function (instead of "My Account") to search for the topic.
