To just to make TurboTaxCindyH's answer clear, she switched from answering your question about a surviving spouse in the year of death still filing as Married Filing Jointly with both parties listed on the Form 1040, and then totally separately the  Form 1041 Estate return, a separate document, provides that the Estate gets a $600 "personal exemption.
