Deductions & credits
Yes, you can deduct the cost of the gun as a job-related expense if you are required to have one per your employer.
Job-related expenses are located in:
- Federal Taxes
- Deductions & Credits (you may have to select See all tax breaks)
- Employment Expenses
- Job-Expenses for W2 Income
Notes:
- If you are not itemizing your deductions (have mortgage interest, real estate taxes, charitable contributions etc.), entering details of your job expenses for W-2 won't affect your refund.
- You can write off the cost of OD (off duty) gun if your department requires you to carry one off duty or you must have a weapon to carry as a back-up.
