Yes, you can write off your expenses as long as you were actively seeking employment in acting.  Some business can go a whole year without any sales.  They can deduct expenses as long as the business is "open for business" so to speak. You will file like your self employed.  Most acting jobs as I understand it, will consider you like a contractor rather than an employee.  They will give you a 1099-MISC instead of a W-2, is that correct?
