Deductions & credits
You might see the error, "RFM Misc Itemized Deductions Stmt: PT I, Fed Estate Tax is not between the prescribed upper and lower limits," when using California tax software like TurboTax or FreeTaxUSA during the state review. This isn’t usually a bug in the California tax program. It often happens because of a technical validation issue—like data importing incorrectly, a leftover zero from an earlier entry, or a mismatch between federal and state rules for Miscellaneous Itemized Deductions. To fix:
- Go to the California Return Section: Navigate to your California state return and locate the section for Adjustments to Itemized Deductions (often found under "Other Deductions" or "Itemized Deductions" in the state review section).
- Review "Other Taxes" or "Estate Tax": Look for a line labeled "Federal Estate Tax" or "Income in Respect of a Decedent".
- Delete the Value: If there is a "0" or any number there, delete it to make the field completely blank.
- Check for "No" Selection: If there is a checkbox asking if you have this deduction, ensure it is unchecked if you do not have federal estate tax (most people do not).
- Forms Mode (Desktop Software): If using desktop software, switch to Forms Mode, locate the CA Itemized Deduction Worksheet, and delete the erroneous entry there.
