These medical expenses will need to be itemized and reported on Schedule A. Total medical expenses for you, your spouse, and your dependents must exceed
10% of your adjusted gross income (7.5% if you're 65 or older as of
December 31, 2016). The deduction is limited to the expenses above and
beyond this amount.
To enter medical expenses in Schedule A:
- Open (continue) your return if it's not already open.
- Click on Orange box “Take me to my return”
- In the Search box (top right-hand corner), type “schedule a’
- Click on the Magnifying Glass icon or hit Enter.
- Click on “Jump to schedule a” link high-lighted in Blue.
- Answer Yes on the Did you have any medical expenses in 2016? screen.
- You will then be prompted to enter your medical expenses, starting with prescriptions.
