Deductions & credits

When TurboTax determines that the amount you entered exceeds your allowable deduction for the year based on your Adjusted Gross Income, it will prompt you to identify whether any of the organizations to which you donated have a lower AGI limit and it will calculate the amount you can deduct this year.

If you are preparing your 2024 return with TurboTax on the same account as last year, it will recognize that you have excess donations to carry over from 2023. Once all of your income, deductions, and credits are entered for 2024,  Schedule A of your return will show how much of your charitable deductions were allowed if they were transferred over from 2023.

If you review your completed Schedule A and you don't see anything carried over from 2023, but you know you had contributions for 2023 that weren't included on your 2023 return because they exceeded your Adjusted Gross Income, follow these directions to manually enter your charitable carryover:

If you are using TurboTax Online and have already entered your current year donations, go back to the Contributions section. Scroll down to the lower part of the screen where more options are provided. Click Start on the button next to Charitable Contributions Carryover from 2023. See screenshot below.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop, there is a button in the Charitable Donations section to select to enter carryovers manually.

See this help article for more information on charitable carryovers.

See this article also for more information on contributions.
