AW-2 Box 12 code W entry disappears
After I enter my W-2 Box 12 code C, D, DD and W data the C and W disappears after I go through my return. On the HSA entry it says that there are no contributions because box 12 was completed. When I return to box 12 the Code w data is no longer there (along with code c). I even tried saving immediately after entering the data.
Why does this happen?

This is a very strange description. When you say that these items "disappear", you mean that when you return to the W-2, the numbers (and some of the letters) are no longer there?
Did you auto import the W-2? If so, please delete it and type it in by hand.

I agree it is very strange. I entered my W-2 data by hand. I enter each of the 4 codes C, D, DD and W and their corresponding amounts. I see all 4 lines of entries and then I continue past that section and when I go back C and W are missing. The reason I noticed it was when I was working on the HSA section it was not showing any contributions. When I clicked on the info icon it said that it does not show a contribution because Box 12 needs to completed. When I go back to Box 12 there are only 2 entries D and DD. I can reenter but they don't stay after going past that screen.

Hmpf. Are you using Online or CD/download? If the latter, is it Windows or Mac?

I am unable to reproduce this error. I entered all 4 codes that you listed and then went to different sections, but the numbers and codes are staying in place.
You can try going to forms mode and entering it directly on your W-2 worksheet or you can also try logging out of TurboTax completely, shutting down and rebooting (remember to save your return) and then try to re-enter.

Vanessa,
Thank you. It is an odd situation. I logged out and tried entering and the same thing occurred. I then deleted the W-2, logged out, logged back in and manually entered it again. It seems to be retaining all 4 codes now.
Thanks again.

I had a similar problem with the W2 information not staying and transferring to the worksheets for Box 12 and the data not staying in for the state wages and taxes information. After several attempts I went into the forms mode and entered the information. That worked.

Pam, do you also have the CD/download software on the Mac?

No. I have software that I downloaded on line that was purchased at Sam's Club and have an HP PC. Thanks for asking the question so I didn't have to wait days for possible solutions.

Pam,
Thank you. Yes it was odd. Deleting and reentering the information worked for me but the solution that you and Vanessa provided would have been easier. Glad it is working just odd as I have never experienced this in past years. Thanks again.

I also have this problem. I'm using Windows and downloaded TT from the website. I've let it update each time I sign in and also went online to check for updates. I entered the w-2 manually and box 12 had two entries - D and W. Both disappeared when I went to work on HSA. I deleted and re-entered w-2. Same problem. It shows up when the program asks if you have any additional contributions to HSA. The line above should show what employer contribution is, and if 0 your w-2 is incomplete.
I even deleted the entire file and started from scratch with no luck. I did read this thread and followed the advice of going to the form and manually entering it there. However, this IS an error in the program and needs to be fixed (typing this as of 3/12/2025). Note: I've been using Turbo tax for over 20 years.

Your report is puzzling. The issue reported above was initially for the Mac version of the TurboTax CD/download product. Since then, there have been literally thousands of users using this feature in the Windows version of TurboTax - which number includes me since I typically answer several hundred HSA questions each year - and no one else has reported this.
I am pleased with the steps you have taken - all things I would have asked you to do - so let me ask you these things:
1. How many W-2s are on your return? One for you, but do you have another one? Do your spouse have a W-2?
2. On the screen in the HSA interview labelled, "Let's Enter [name]'s HSA contributions", do I understand you correctly when you say that on the screen you see the top part that reads "2024 employer and payroll contributions", and below that you see "Any contributions you personally made", and the top line you see 0 (zero) for the amount that is coming from code W in box 12 of the W-2?
3. Since you have the CD/download version of TurboTax, can I ask you to go into Forms mode and look for the "Form W-2 (name)" worksheet, where "name" is the name of the employer on the W-2, and look at the entries for box 12 (partway down the page, not between 11 and 13 like you might expect but after box 14)?
I don't see any reason to ask for a sanitized version of your return yet (but I will if I have to)...

Hi,
Been away from computer for a couple of days.
1. Two w-2s
2. Correct.
3. Box 12 now shows w and amount, and D and an amount. But remember, I had to manually go into the form and re-enter the information. It was blank when the error happened. Again, I even deleted the entire file and restarted and the error occurred again. When I finally manually entered the info into the w-2 worksheet the information stayed and I was able to continue.
Thanks,
Pat Williams

That is a very strange story, but I am happy that you got it to work!
